Another year in bowling

Thoughts of the day

The start of this season was strange, not quite the same interest. I well remember getting down the green in the snow and sleet to get some practice in, not this year. I think this may be due to having done it so often, maybe it’s something to do with having been quite successful in bowling terms, the hunger is not quite there. When I say successful I am thinking in part of the club, Beaumaris have been up with the best over the years, coming from being new boys on the block when I started to one of the better clubs. It’s funny though, the old drive was there when I got on the green last Saturday. In some ways I think the game needs a shot in the arm; it needs more young people taking it up, some new faces. I think we all need to think about the future of the game. Without doubt it has so much going for it. I remember at one time looking into taking it to Florida, though bowling happens there it is all the flat green version and though fairly successful there were great opportunities for development. Thinking back to those days and what I wrote at the time many things still apply. The game has the ability to become obsessive, we all know that, something that does that has much going for it. The game needs good greens; too many in our neck of the woods are not good. I will continue these thoughts later – got the go out – not bowling.

The first match

This is the start of yet another year in bowling, all my time spent with the Beaumaris bowling club. I am getting older and the opponents seem to be getting younger.  I have  started this year without  my usual  eagerness, maybe this will improve when the weather warms up, we'll wait and  see. I want to try and be honest with  myself  as the year progresses. Saturday last  saw Beaumaris beat Denbigh 11 to 3 , not bad. I played Martin Syvlis  and thought he was even less interested than me, the cold got to him and I know Martin willl improve when the sun gets on his back. The Harris boys had a bad day at the office but this wiill change!
