Yuji to absorb

I picked up the first volume of the dark, dirty and über-violent Blue Gender on a whim. It's directed by Ryousuke Takahashi, who directed Gasaraki and Armored Trooper Votoms, and it was created (interestingly enough) by the animation house AIC, who is more well-known for doing happy titles like Tenchi Muyo! and Ah! My Goddess.

Nanu Naru

First of all, let me just say that there is only a small number of times that Naru launching Keitaro into geostationary orbit for minimal reason is funny: and that number is three. Thusly, I was pretty tired of that gag about halfway through Episode 1. What I realized, however, is how much Naru grated on me. Unlike most of the other characters, Naru seemed to have few redeeming qualities and, besides...that maid's outfit...yow, and the idea that she was this "sweet and/or tender girl underneath all the anger and/or apathy" type just seemed phony to me coming from her.

Secondly, I hated the way they jerked around my two favorite characters: Mutsumi and especially Shinobu. Poor, cute, little Shinobu always seemed to get the short end of the stick and that bugged me because in a light-hearted series like this. I felt that the sweetest, most earnest character deserved better. At least Mutsumi seemed to be okay with the predestined end result.
