Ian McEwan and saturday
Am reading Ian McEwan's latest novel, Saturday. A fascinating novel. On the surface this is the account of a neurosurgeon, man of science, who rationalises and analyses every event in his life. Yet below the surface there is a much more interesting narrative. Despite all this rationalisation Perowne is as susceptible as the rest of us to uncertainly, irrationality and un-thought through emotion. Wonderful account of the first encounter with Baxter. Again, it seems that science has saved Perowne from a good beating but later it is literature that will save him from an even worse fate.
Within me too the little scientist does battle every day with the irrationalist. The irrationalist doesn’t always win but he does have a lot more fun!
