Follow, Don't Lead

Mood: Still messing around doing not very much - bad!
Listening to: Ghost song in my head: 'Malaika' by Miriam Makeba

This article from The Guardian made my hair stand up on end, I was so angry:

Revealed: how UK banks exploit charity tax laws.

The worst thing about it is that many of them say they do it because it's normal practice. The same banks who put commercials on the TV about not being sheep, or expecting their clients to be sheep... "follow, don't lead."

Quite.

Bubble Chasing

Mood: Not too well
Listening to: Quietness

Yesterday I was looking for shower gel, and found:

  • Shower Gel, 300 ml bottle, £1.79
  • Bubble Bath, 500 ml bottle, £1.69

Both bottles appeared to contain exactly the same stuff. Maybe it wasn't 100% identical (just so they could insist that it wasn't), but how significant could the differences be? I pointed it out to Mum, and she said one of her friends was saying that there's no difference between shampoo and shower gel. And now I'm suspicious that there's no difference between shower gel and bubble bath.

Continuing to browse, I found two 500 ml bottles of bubble bath by a different manufacturer - two for the price of one (£1.49). Guess which I bought.

Reminds me of another time when I was looking for something I'm keeping under wraps. Looking along the shelf at the full range, I noticed (by the same manufacturer of the very same product):

  • two boxes of 16: £1.50
  • two boxes of 32: £1.50
  • two boxes of 50: £1.50

Again, guess which I bought? Hopefully I wasn't missing two boxes of 100...

Sometimes I don't understand the world. Only today I was going through one of those spells of "why do people buy so much for themselves?" That includes us - it makes me sick at heart. I suppose by two of us moving into one house, we're sharing heat, light, broadband, car journeys, cooking power etc, and that has to be a good thing. The bad thing is that we'll also be sharing bin space instead of having our own bins to ourselves.

Feeling a bit fuzzy - slight bug I think. Good night to all bloggers. Also goodnight from Mum's cat Cheeky, who has just joined us at the desk.

Incredible to believe it's that time of year again, but it's Blogging Against Disablism Day on May 1st. It's a lot closer than I thought! I don't know what I will say, but probably something will occur to me before then. Meanwhile I already have a few older posts in the categories of Hearing Loss and Agoraphobia.

If anyone else would like to participate on May 1st (or as close as you can around that date), just visit this page at Diary of a Goldfish for instructions. Hope to see you there!

Who Do You Support - and Should it Affect Business Decisions?

Mood: Mood not improved
Listening to: Nothing

The Aw Diddums blog has moved to WordPress. This post can be found there

Anybody else notice this news item from The Scotsman about Scots losing business because of the sides they take (or don't take) in the World Cup? I wonder if it is happening anywhere else? It's a hot topic... when I read that news article there were at least 98 comments at the foot of it.

What I see is a company taking business away from another company who, as far as I'm aware, have said nothing at all about which teams they are supporting in the World Cup (and it's probably a fair mixture). That seems a shame to me.

As a child I was clueless when it came to supporting one's own nation. We were watching It's a Knockout! – a wacky obstacle-course sports thing with different countries participating. My sister said "I support the team with GB on their backs."

I was too young to know that GB stood for Great Britain, or what the other letters meant – all I knew was that my sister supported GB, so I had to find a team of my own to support. That way it was more fun and maybe I could beat her. I thought the letters CZ looked nice, so I chose that. CZ and their small Scottish supporter didn't do particularly well, as far as I remember. But that's the name of the game.
