Crack of Doom

Listening to: Bedtime groans

After you've been blogging a while, you start to wonder if you've used certain titles before. I checked on Google and I think I'm safe with this one.

For about a week I've had painful ribs from coughing - on both sides, so I had to lie flat in bed as it was too sore to turn over. It caused me to remember a girl I knew at my last office. Back then I had bad colds more regularly than I do now, along with sore ribs from coughing, and one time Mum told me I had probably fractured a rib.

"Oh, is that possible?" I thought, surprised. "But if Mum says it can happen, maybe it can."

Tending to assume I know less than everybody else (and often it's true), I casually mentioned to the girl in the office that I broke a rib with my coughing.
"No!" cried the girl - "that's not possible! You can't POSSIBLY break a rib coughing."
"I don't know," I said, "but it's very sore."
She looked disbelieving.

I still think about her sometimes, and ponder whether or not it's possible to break a rib coughing, or if it's just a really strained muscle or something. Which of us was right? I lay awake, flat on my back, still wondering.

This morning I bounced up with something of my old energy, which was nice - the pain was fading and the cough was going away. But just half an hour ago I was overtaken by a heavy fit of spluttering and something went in my back with a nasty crack. I heard it.

It hurts.

And what's worse is when I have to cough (I can't always fight it down) and then that REALLY hurts. Limping to bed now - I wonder if I'll be able to sit up again! And I wonder if it has happened to the other girl yet.

If there's anything worse than a paper cut, it's a metal measuring tape cut. I'm glad I left sticking plasters at my old house.
