My experience in the Deaf community in the U.S. (which, admittedly, has been limited lately) is that hearing people try to find some sort of common ground from which to relate to their Deaf friends. In those (usually clumsy) attempts, they say things that, if they thought about how it came across, they'd realize they shouldn't say at all.

No one should compare someone to anyone else. I can't stand it when people try to make light of problems or situations by pointing out that someone's always got it worse than you do. This is true - someone's always got it worse, and someone's always got it better, but that doesn't mitigate one way or the other the experience I'm having right now, does it? No, it doesn't. I wish people would just stop and think for two seconds before they open their mouths.

I don't like conversations where people stop short of saying something but imply things (that fill in the blank you describe so well) about "how I'm handling my disability" . I feel like saying "I'll hand out a survey next week and you can fill that out" - Am I a 10? a 9? oops only a 5? LOL that's how ridiculous it gets....

Hi Mrs Chili, hope you got time to read some of the other BADD posts - some of them were saying the same thing; that people sometimes are trying too hard to connect and just end up saying the wrong thing. I was probably seen as someone who had the potential to do better - and to be fair, I thought so too. It was only when I tried so hard that I discovered more clearly where my limitations lay, and it was a turning point (though gradual) in how I perceived my relationship with the rest of the world. Not such a bad thing really! You start coming out of the tunnel, staring thoughtfully at the flowers and humming a little tune, like a certain Bear.
