THE SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE

Many Christians, citing the sanctity of human life, not least the American right including President Bush, are against stem cell research, which has the promise to find a cure for many diseases, and thus save countless lives in the future.

Other Christians, maybe the same ones, are against the use of condoms as a birth control measure, citing once again the sanctity of human life.

Is someone who dies of AIDS contracted by unprotected sex somehow less human than a mere stem cell, which is no more human than a spermatozoa?

Is not the Christian viewpoint flawed, inconsistant, and lethal?

It's interesting that some of these fundamentalists are so rabidly against researching a 16-cell foetus but will slice ten billion cells off the end of their baby boy's penis without so much as a second thought!

I like to think Jesus was much more 'moderate' in his ideas and it is just 'man' who has 'bastardised' what was probably were some generally good 'values' for people to live by. I look at the bible as a 'cultural artifact'. It tells us more about the composers of the text and the times. As women get a pretty raw deal in it - I could not really respect it. Same with most 'spiritual/religious' texts. I happen to be quite fond of a lot of the Buddhist stuff yet it also contains sexist discourse that pisses me off. Luckily I am an extraordinarily tolerant woman! ;)
