the raindance worked then

A good spell of much needed rain on Sunday has revived the plot a bit.

I am really chuffed by my tomatoes

Its my first attempt and they have had no feed, watered once weekly and
no trimming of sideshoots. They are fruiting pretty heavily and still
flowering. I am hoping for a bumper crop. They are a bush variety and
have turned into a sprawling mass but so far looking healthy.I guess
the taste will be the proof.

I was also quite surprised with the lettuce and spinach which I put in
a week past on Sunday (17/07/2005).I watered them in pretty well and
have really left them to it since.I expected them to have either died
or be slug ravaged but they seem to be coming on strong.

The two rows furthest away are little Gem lettuce, closest is the perpetual spinach. The bush on the left is some more tomatoes.

Lastly my Heritage Beans are podding :D

I doubt the crop will be huge but I will get enough for a few
meals and some spare to sow next year.I will...

Sunday Digging

I had some help today from my father in law who very kindly cleared a
lot of my paths.I need to find some way of controlling the weeds coming
through the gaps.
Whilst Graham done the paths I dug over the top bed.I am hoping to get
some late peas in there next weekend. The weather was very warm and my
Heritage beans were looking splendid with the small red flowers
appearing.Mike gave me a bag full of beans which had cropped on his
plot so I dug up a few spuds and we had them all for lunch, very
tasty. The beans are quite sweet when you eat them raw and delicious
when cooked.

Rox and Lady Cosmos (from allotments4all forum) here is a picture of
the beans flowering.Hope you get some success growing them as they
taste lovely.

Strimming

Saturday :

Borrowed the petrol strimmer and went to town on the high weeds that
have been going for it on the plot.It took about 30 mins to strim most
of them down and then another couple of hours to get them cleared up
and into the compost bin.I removed te tarpaulkin from the top bed and
covered what was left of the weeds.Hopefully come autumn I should have
an easier job of clearing what is left out,Cannot wait for that....

Water

Spent about an hour watering my plot tonight.Pressure is pretty poor
when someone else switches a tap on but it it better than nothing.I can
also supplement with watering cans from the water butt.

I forgot the digi cam last night so took a picture of the Heritage Red
Broad Beans with my phone (quality isn't great). They are coming on
pretty well.
The weeds and grass is getting mega high on the wild part of the plot.I will need to get them strimmed asap.

I have been looking at making a wormery to further reduce houshold
waste and feed the plot/garden.There is some instructions to make one
for about £15 online so I might have a go at putting one together. There
is a company who makes them (for about £90 upwards pfft!!) displaying
at Gardeners World live so I may try and have a poke around thier stall
on Friday if I can track it down.

Ummmm.....

Hardly had any time this week to go up and do much to the plot.
Today I managed about half an hour to do some watering.
I had a chat with the site chairman and it is inspection time next weekend.
My plot isn't too bad considering I have only have it a couple of
months but I do need to strim down some of the high weeds and grass by
the fence.I can loan the petrol strimmer for free so that shouldn't
take much to clear.I am hoping to dig over the bed next to the tomatoes
and beans. This is currently covered with tarpaulin. If I can dig
that over and get something in, peas maybe, I can use the spare tarp to
cover the strimmed weeds and hopefully get them killed off for next
year.

My comfrey tea has gone !!!!!
either the dustbin I was using has leaked or it has evaporated in the
sun.I think it was the former but all I am left with is a stinking bag
of rotted leaves.I may just plunge them into another bucket and see
what transpires.

The Heritage beans are coming up nicely but my...

First Entry

I have decided to start a blog to keep a record of what is going on in my allotment.
More to keep track of dates and times of planting etc than to be of any interest to anyone :D

07/07/2005:
Went to the plot for an hour last night watering and putting some garden cuttings into the compost bin.

Some tomatoes are looking a bit worse for wear.Replaced two plants with spares from the cold frame.
I have found growing them on a window ledge produces slim leggy plants
rather than stockier stronger growth. - thanks to Mike for the
info.Note to self look for a greenhouse going cheap.

I planted the tomatoes out 29/05/2005.

Desiree potatoes are looking pretty strong and large, coming on well
from what I can gather. The pink firs (which I planted about 3 weeks too
early) are smaller but this may be the variety.

Onions are looking ok and my heritage beans (thanks Mike again for the seeds) are coming through well.
No sign of the runner beans as yet but they have only been in...
