Water

Listening to: Jeff Buckley

Spent about an hour watering my plot tonight.Pressure is pretty poor when someone else switches a tap on but it it better than nothing.I can also supplement with watering cans from the water butt.

I forgot the digi cam last night so took a picture of the Heritage Red Broad Beans with my phone (quality isn't great). They are coming on pretty well.
The weeds and grass is getting mega high on the wild part of the plot.I will need to get them strimmed asap.

I have been looking at making a wormery to further reduce houshold waste and feed the plot/garden.There is some instructions to make one for about £15 online so I might have a go at putting one together. There is a company who makes them (for about £90 upwards pfft!!) displaying at Gardeners World live so I may try and have a poke around thier stall on Friday if I can track it down.

six weeks on.....

not much change I hear you cry.Well.......
The weeds on the right are growing pretty well.Onions at the front, potatoes in the middle two beds,Heritage beans at the back in front of the cold frame and Broad beans on the wigwam frame. Also loads of raspberrys all around.Oh and a new compost bin made from old pallets.

Ummmm.....

Listening to: Northern Soul

Hardly had any time this week to go up and do much to the plot.
Today I managed about half an hour to do some watering.
I had a chat with the site chairman and it is inspection time next weekend.
My plot isn't too bad considering I have only have it a couple of months but I do need to strim down some of the high weeds and grass by the fence.I can loan the petrol strimmer for free so that shouldn't take much to clear.I am hoping to dig over the bed next to the tomatoes and  beans. This is currently covered with tarpaulin. If I can dig that over and get something in, peas maybe, I can use the spare tarp to cover the strimmed weeds and hopefully get them killed off for next year.

My comfrey tea has gone !!!!! either the dustbin I was using has leaked or it has evaporated in the sun.I think it was the former but all I am left with is a stinking bag of rotted leaves.I may just plunge them into another bucket and see what transpires.

The Heritage beans are coming up nicely but my tomatoes seem to be suffering from being too skinny. Some look like flowers are developing so I may get some small crop.

First Entry

Listening to: Stone Roses

I have decided to start a blog to keep a record of what is going on in my allotment.
More to keep track of dates and times of planting etc than to be of any interest to anyone :D

07/07/2005:
Went to the plot for an hour last night watering and putting some garden cuttings into the compost bin.

Some tomatoes are looking a bit worse for wear.Replaced two plants with spares from the cold frame.
I have found growing them on a window ledge produces slim leggy plants rather than stockier stronger growth. - thanks to Mike for the info.Note to self look for a greenhouse going cheap.

I planted the tomatoes out 29/05/2005.

Desiree potatoes are looking pretty strong and large, coming on well from what I can gather. The pink firs (which I planted about 3 weeks too early) are smaller but this may be the variety.

Onions are looking ok  and my heritage beans (thanks Mike again for the seeds) are coming through well.
No sign of the runner beans as yet but they have only been in since the 29/05/05

I have started to make a comfrey tea brew. After finding out from various sources that this makes excellent organic fertiliser and also finding out that the plant that has been invading my garden since we moved in is actually comfrey, I gathered about half a mailsack worth and put it in a black bin half filled with water.
I had been warned about the smell and must admit it is getting quite potent.
