INTERVIEW WITH KUNO BECKER
We talked in Los Angeles with the new figure of hollywood and mexican cinema, a hot violinist who at the age of 17 changed his path in order to dedicated himself to acting.
I'm in Los Angeles doing the coverage for the Oscars for our magazine, when I get a call from the office telling me I have to go to Arenas; that those people are making very interesting things in hispanic cinema; that Kuno Becker is there, that he has done filming Imagining Argentina. "To be there at 12 and see if I interview him", they say. "Kuno Becker?" I ask, since I am columbian. "Yes, they told me that he is a famous mexican actor, something like Antonio Banderas", my interlocutor. I of course know who the people of Arenas are. Santiago Pozo is huge in the industry, and Arenas is the company that he created 2 years ago, after associating with Universal Poctures. Their last film, is Empire, with John Leguizamo, which made over 7 million dollars in its weekend release. And they've released the sequel to The Fast and The Furious, and a production with Antonio Banderas. But its the first time I hear that name Kuno Becker, and unfortunately I don't have time to investigate anything about his life.
I'm on my way and focused on another mission: interview an expert in trends and member of the La Jolla Institute, to understand a little bit about whats happening in the hispanic market in the east coast. At the end I discover that taking a taxi in L.A. is mas harder than taking a taxi in Manhattan on a rainy day. There I loose a bunch of time, until I arrive at Arenas and I welcomed by Venessa. She introduces me to Kuno, who gets mad at me for getting there late. We enter a boardroom and without any perlude we begin the interview, without suspecting my ignorance about his life and career. I say to myself "as soon as I am done here I will make my task of investigating his life and career.
When I'm going to ask him the first question, Kuno shoots, as if he were a cassette player on play. 20 minutes later he stops, as if it sank to a stop, and he says good bye. He said to me something like this: That his lifelong dream was to work with the director Christopher Hampton, with Antonio Banderas and Emma Thompson (with whom he shares starring credits in Imagining Argentina). That if he could choose a cast, a director and a movie he would choose that one; that his passion is filmmaking; that with acting he obtains his few moments of cathersis and relief. That he was a violinist; who comes from mexican television; that he starred in a mexican film called Lucia, Lucia; that he doesn't know why he has been successful; that he is humble; down to earth; that he is thankful with life. That the character he had to play in Imagining Argentina was very strong; that he liked Argentina and that right now he is not in love. That he won't talk to me about the film because it would damage the story; nor who he represents [his role] so it won't stop me from going to see it; that the only thing he wants as an actor is that his roles/characters are real, and since I got there late, he has to go.
He says everything with that fire of experience, convinced that he has accomplished his mission. He doesn't mention one phrase out of the script, there is not a single license of his irresponsibility. He stands up and thanks me, and I see he has one of those lunchboxes kids take with them to school. Its a "Transformers" lunchbox. I ask him about that, and he showed to me, proudly that it has a thermist and that a friend gave it to him. He tells me Optimus Prime was his favorite Transformor. Kuno disappears; I talk to Venessa to schedule a photo session and we agreed to make it on next Saturday. Since Kuno doesn't have his entourage, I am going to pick him up at his house. They gave me the directions.
I am excited to think about the fact that I have the afternoon off, until I remember about my research on Kuno Becker, and just like he commented, he was a violinist in his adolescence. He obtained a scholarship to study violin in Salzburgo Austria and at age 17 he changed his path and dedicated himself to acting. After making respective studies, he worked in several mexican soap operas, won 2 important awards and this year he obtained the lead role in Lucia, Lucia. The rest of the story Kuno had summarized it for me and I felt satisfied about making my task well.
Between Tuesday and Friday in the evening there is an exchange in calls between Arenas and I. That Kuno can't make it at that time; that Kuno would like for the photo session to be earlier; that he has to go to San Diego; that they are very embarassed, but Kuno has to cancel. He has a personal problem. In the end, Kuno does the photo shoot but it has to be early on Saturday and has to last very shortly, because he has to leave in the middle of day to go to San Diego. I get a photographer and a location in an old factory in East L.A. Now I understand the work of those producers, Before this, I always asked myself what did those people who yelled at everybody in photoshoots do, but are not the ones who take the photos, nor the ones who are getting the photos taken. They give me Kuno's sizes and then comes the most fun part: a shopping spree to choose the clothes that will be used in the photoshoot. I pick Kuno up at his house around 9 in the morning. He is calm, on a good note and more alert than me. At that time it didn't work for caffeine deficiency. Since Kuno knows I'm columbian, he obviously talks to me about John Leguizamo and tells me that he saw his stand up. I thank him and to repay his courtesy I tell him that when I was little I used to watch Cantinflas movies. The photoshoot is without eagerness, with out slips and can't be any easier and uncomplicated. We connected well talking about the old Atari games and the Thundercats, that we both like.
Recently a press release arrived in which it said that they had just chosen Kuno Becker for the starring role of Two Lovers and a Wedding (Isla Bella), directed by Matia Karrell. He will surely do very well. I hope to interview him again, and talk about his successful career with his three Hollywood films that have placed him as a new Hollywood "heartthrob".
