The Gentleman And the 12 Apostles
In 1963 when I was eight years old my parents took my sister and I for a four day trip. At one stage we visited Glenelg and I remember seeing rocks near the the beautiful sea. It looked so beautiful that I thought that it couldn't be any more so.
I noticed a whale rising and plunging a few times. I wished I was able to be part of a company of the whales. Another time I noticed I saw the whale getting ready to be harpooned from one of the ships crew and taken by them in shortly by being pulled in quickly with the harpoon and rope. [I asked Colin how he felt about that; he said he felt happy because the whale might be nice to eat. It was before lunch so he was probably feeling hungry].
The rocks were ever so gorge-ous it couldn't look any more ravin-ous . We saw the rocks from the car which was near the cliff. We wanted to keep our distance from the cliff and not fall down from it. I was happy with the view but did not wish to go closer.
We continued through Glenelg to Mount Gambier, where we bought limestone for the garden at home. After picking it up and visiting the Blue Lakes we went back to Glenelg and saw the gypsy caravan. We nagged our father to take a photo of it (my sister did not) and eventually my father and I had a big argument over who would take the photo - but we could not agree. Of course my father won but when he tried the camera he realized he didn’t know how to use the camera and he asked me to do it.
Traveling towards Port Campbell I saw some penguins that looked as big as the King Penguins which we’d seen at the Twelve Apostles. They could have been in a circus. They were even bigger than the Fairy Penguins at Philip Island which are better known.
The whole trip lasted for four days in all. We stayed each night in a tent. After we met in the tent we wanted to travel to Apollo Bay and go fishing on a boat with a relative. We caught some nice flathead but not that many – I remember wanting to keep fishing.
Our relative Kate cooked them up and they were lovely to eat- gorgeous in fact.
