Artful distortion as a means to fool the mind into acceptance of what it would otherwise find strange or repulsive.
This distortion was mentioned in the context of motion pictures which are a series of still shots shown in rapid sucession giving the illusion of watching movement in that still image.
We come to accept the viewing as true representation of movement, but it is not.
