Pottermania

Mood: Impressed

Hubby and I went to see Order of the Phoenix tonight, and since he's the Potter nerd, I'll let him take over:

Hubby here.  Overall, I think we both really enjoyed the film, but as the Potter afficionado (I prefer that term to nerd) a number of things stuck out.  The film was very well done, and a number of the necessary changes from the book succeeded well, especially the portrayal of Luna Lovegood.  One of the reviews I've read says that the producers must not have searched for an actress, but instead must have just shaken the pages of book 5 until Luna fell out, stood up, and asked to be called Evanna Lynch.  She was hysterical.

It's clear to me that the screenwriter made the decision to keep a central thread running through the story; that being Harry's concern that he is becoming more like Voldemort, a thread which isn't really present in the book, and it seems that some things got sacrificed in service of this thread.  What's puzzled me is that I don't really understand the reason behind some of these things being excised, and I think that about 5 minutes could be added to the length of the film which would have made this film go from being well done to being the finest film in the series to date.

I'll do my best not to spoil anything for those who haven't seen it yet, but my impression is that the ending seems rushed, and the drama present in the climax of the book (particularly the revelation of the prophecy and the final battle) isn't as well executed, though I think the emotional impact is still there.  The inclusion of Kreacher is good to see, but his importance in the plot is eliminated which then necessitates removing Snape's positive action at the end (and also defers the question of his ultimate loyalty).  Other pieces are less puzzling, and more simply a case of what seems like lazy writing.  The inclusion of a spell that isn't present until the 6th book stands out in particular.

Despite these nitpicks, I absolutely recommend the film.  The highs in this film are the highest the series has ever been.  The DA meetings in particular shine as perfectly executed.  If you're not as bloody-minded about the books, you'll definitely enjoy it as much as I have if not more.

One final word to the screenwriters.  I would suggest that as we approach the amazement that is the 6th book, and the as yet unseen 7th book, it's increasingly important to minimize deviations from the text.  Some of the deviations in this film really pulled me away from the magic of the universe, and I would hate for the same to be true in Half Blood Prince, or in the ultimate conclusion.

Trying to catch up on our movies

by: Buttercup2   Category: Movies   Keywords: Movies, Little, Miss, Sunshine

Well we have gotten very behind on keeping up with the movies that have come out this year so we are now working on catching up. Tonight our bill of fare will be "Little Miss Sunshine."

We are hoping it is as good as the Departed was last night! Hubby has a full day of conference calls so that makes it a longggggggggg day for me with only one or two phone calls all day.

Off this computer to read my bood for a little while.

Take care folks,
Aly

The movie, Departed

by: Buttercup2   Category: Movies   Keywords: Departed, Nicholson, Damon, DiCaprio, Baldwin, Sheen

Well hubby and I finally rented the movie "Departed' to watch tonight. I must say while the violence and colorful language were all throughout this movie, the acting by all these actors was outstanding. To have all of these actors together in one movie packed a powerful punch through the screen. Martin Scorcese did one helluva job putting this movie together.

I have never been one to go out of my way to watch violent movies but with this cast of characters and all the press about how good it was took my interest to be sure. If you want to be entertained and get your money's worth from acting then this is a movie to watch. I got tired just watching it, lol.

Time to wind down now folks,
Aly

What a night for tv!

by: Buttercup2   Category: Movies   Keywords: 24, Heroes

What a night for TV shows!!! The power of Bauer and the mystique of Heroes all packaged into one night. Now wouldn't you know it these are the only 2 shows I watch faithfully and they are both on at the same time. I do hope that changes as now we have to tape one while we watch the other one, lol.

That is my quota for the week of watching television besides a few nights of watching The Daily Show with hubby. Well off to the chiropractor for us later on today and my body is looking forward to that I can tell you. Hubby isn't much better with his hips and his back. This cold weather has done a number on us!

Have a good day folks!

Watched two movies tonight

by: Buttercup2   Category: Movies   Keywords: The, Illusionist, Take, the, Lead

Well the Illusionist is a good story about a magician and the love of his life and how they lose one another and find one another again. The plot thickens when she is betrothed to marry a Prince. I won't give away the rest of the story as it is definitely worth watching! The second movie was Take the Lead with Antonio Banderas based on a true story about a professional ballroom dancer bringing his art to the 'rejects' of the schools in New York. This is a movie about the hard knocks of life, how to overcome them, great dancing, and pursuing dreams. Hubby thought we just wanted to watch it because of Antonio, not so. We both love to watch dancing and love this kind of story.

Time for some sleep.

Sweet Dreams,
Aly

Rocky Balboa movie

by: Buttercup2   Category: Movies   Keywords: Rocky, boxing, comeback

Well we finally got out to the movies today to see the new Rocky movie and we're glad we went. While it seemed abit slow in the very beginning the movie started to show its 'heart' midway through. That part I think even surpassed the first movie as Stallone has matured as an actor and as a person. I would recommend seeing this movie if you need or want to be inspired and believe in the message that you are only as old as your heart is.... so true!

Well take care all and God Bless.
