Here are "six flags" -- six medical symptoms -- you should keep in mind:
1. If you have unexplained weight loss and/or loss of appetite, you may have a serious underlying medical illness.
"If you're on a diet, you're expecting this to happen. But if you're eating the same way -- and now have to adjust your belt a few notches tighter -- you could have a serious problem," Shulman says.
"With ovarian cancer, the opposite is true," he says. "Fluid builds in the abdomen, and women think they are gaining weight. But if you have been at the same weight range for years, and doing nothing different, see a doctor."
2. Slurred speech, paralysis, weakness, tingling, burning pains, numbness, and confusion are signs of a stroke, and you should get to an appropriate emergency center immediately. Early treatment may prevent permanent damage to the brain or even save your life.
Slurred speech can often go unnoticed, says Shulman. However, you might have a blood clot in a blood vessel going to the brain or bleeding in a blood vessel.
3. Black, tarry stools may indicate a hemorrhage from an ulcer of the stomach or the intestine. It is important to stop the bleeding and to rule out cancer as a cause.
What you eat changes the color of stools. But black, tarry stools mean there may be bleeding higher in the intestine, says Shulman. It could be a sign of a bleeding ulcer or cancer in the intestine.
4. A headache accompanied by a stiff neck and fever is an indicator of a serious infection called meningitis.
In fact, if you can't put your chin on your chest, that's a sign you may have bacterial meningitis, says Shulman. You need antibiotics immediately to kill the bacteria before it infects and scars the brain.
5. A sudden, agonizing headache, more severe than any you have felt before, could mean you are bleeding in the brain. Go to an emergency room immediately.
A brain aneurysm is rare, but it can happen -- even in people under 40. "It can be very disastrous if it's not treated," says Shulman. If you have a severe, crushing headache, you may have an aneurysm, which is a blood-filled pouch bulging out from a weak spot in the wall of a brain artery. If treated before it bursts, it could save your life.
6. For women: Vaginal bleeding after menopause is a waning sign of possible cancer.
Some women are in denial when they discover postmenopausal bleeding. "Others think it's a little cut, or something in their urine," says Shulman. But bleeding after menopause is a sign of uterine cancer, which is treatable if caught early.
6. For men: A lump in your testicle with or without a small lump in the groin could be serious. Testicular cancer is more commonly found in testicles that did not naturally descend from the abdomen to the scrotum.
Guys, when you take a shower, check yourself, says Shulman. "That doesn't mean you have to do it every day, but once in awhile. It's so simple, simpler than washing your hair. It becomes an automatic thing, then it's easier to remember. If you know what 'normal' feels like, then you'll know when it feels abnormal."
In his book, Your Body's Red Light Warning Signals, Neil Shulman, MD, provides a head-to-toe owner's manual for the human body. His book lists hundreds of medical symptoms that could mean life or death, or serious disability.

How would you like a diamond-encrusted bra and panty set or a 22-carat gold leaf and crystal hammer valued $US2,500.
These are just some of the goodies being sent to Oscar nominees this year in an explosion of celebrity gifting by companies hoping for the kind of publicity that money cannot buy - a star seen using their phone, wearing their purse or gushing about their coffee machine.
What started out in 1989 as a discreet thank you gift from Oscar organisers to the (unpaid) presenters of the Academy Awards has turned into a multimillion-dollar industry that has spawned a wave of freelance gifting and the arrival of the "gift lounge" at most of Hollywood's movie and music awards ceremonies.
"It's certainly something that the Elizabeth Ardens and Casios and Procter & Gambles of the world have seen and deemed to be so valuable that they do it year after year," Lash Fary said, owner of Los Angeles-based Distinctive Assets.
Mood: wishing her well in her recovery~
"Sheryl Crow underwent surgery for breast cancer earlier this week and the prognosis for a full recovery is excellent, her publicist reported Friday. The singer-songwriter had the surgery in Los Angeles on Wednesday and is recovering without complications, said Dave Tomberlin, her publicist.
"Her doctors think her prognosis is excellent," said Tomberlin.
In a statement posted on her Web site, Crow said she would have to postpone a North American concert tour that was scheduled to begin in March. She said she hoped to reschedule the dates as soon as possible.
"Approximately one in seven American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime and more than 2 million Americans are living with breast cancer today," Crow said. "I am joining the more than 200,000 women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year."
Crow called the surgery "minimally invasive" and said she will be undergoing radiation treatment as a precaution. She said she benefited from early detection, and urged other women to have themselves checked. "
.What will life be like in the "new" New Orleans? City Councilman Oliver Thomas doesn't want to see any loafers.
Thomas stirred the pot this week by saying public housing residents who want to come back to the city should be required to get a job. Thomas says he doesn't want people to "sit around watching soap operas." He also says he hasn't gotten any negative reaction to his comments.
But maybe he needs to go to the Hot Spot Barbershop, as we did, just across from one of the city's public housing developments. That's where we found Karrie McElveen. She says too many locals don't have the skills they need to get a job.
We also met Toya Madison, who's been back in New Orleans three days after evacuating to Indiana. She says she's furious that a city councilman would try to "kick people when they're already down."
What do you think? Is Thomas kicking people when they are down? Or is he saying what needs to be said?

Four other soldiers, whose names were not released, received nonjudicial punishments.
The Army has recommended that all be discharged.
The charges do not mention the name of the site, but the division has said previously it was investigating allegations that soldiers appeared on a gay pornography Web site. A spokesman for the division said Friday the charges are a result of that investigation.
The military-themed Web site on which the Army has said soldiers appeared does not make any direct reference to the division or Fort Bragg, a sprawling post about 70 miles south of Raleigh.

"Despite repeated publicity and generally distributed warnings, people still fall for these proposals," the police statement said.
Everyone has to be aware of these online scams. I have someone after my Paypal account almost daily. If the email is from Paypal it will address you with your full name. The scam artists use their logo etc, but they do not use your full name, so beware!
A case for cuddling
Most people equate intimacy with sex, but the Berman survey measured other components as well, such as emotional connections, intellectual bonds and sharing similar social goals.
"Intimacy is multi-faceted; it's not a synonym for sex," says Berman. "It's the sense of feeling close and connected to your partner."
Yet sexual satisfaction in the relationship was the biggest predictor of high levels of intimacy among couples, although Berman notes that it's not just frequency, but "quality of sex as well as the degree of adventurousness."
At the same time, respondents reported better sex on weekends (37 percent) and while on vacation or other special occasions (10 percent).
For couples wanting to heat up their relationships, the survey found that those who kiss regularly and spontaneously not only have a closer emotional connection than those who skimp on cuddling outside the bedroom, but also decreased levels of stress.
