I would have really liked to love this camera since there are so few alternatives on the market in this price range. But I have to say that Canon just skimped too much trying to maintain its presence in the category. Understandably, the yen has appreciated considerably against the US dollar so they had to cut down on giving us the features we would have liked (24mm equivalent wide angle lens and a bigger zoom perhaps), but I could have lived without it if it weren't for the awkward weight balance and the thin grip (at least, for my hands which are not big by any means but also not small). The pictures that it takes are very nice. I am not a professional though, so I am looking for something that is relatively easy to carry around and that doesn't require too much hassle to put on the polarizing filter I have come to demand for my work. Canon should have given the way the lens extends and how that impacts the extension tube setup a lot more thought. And yet, I could have lived with that too, but this is no small camera and it weighs my bag down like a brick. The lens cover is flimsy in my opinion, something that I noticed in at least one or two other reviews but simply refused to believe. The quality of photos is great, with very quick autofocus, and using a zoom lens with the IS feature still gives very sharp images. There is a learning curve with all the features on the camera, and searching through the menu or book takes some time to learn, but using the features makes them easier to remember. Indoors and in flash situations, I haven't found a way to MAKE it take a picture even with the flash unit raised. Seems it wants to find its own focus rather than my manual focus, or something other, but this is the only irritating thing about the camera. This camera is perfect for everyday recording. The HD picture quality is fantastic, and it's very easy to use. I have been searching for a camera for a long time, and this is the only one that has everything I was looking for. The 60 GB internal drive was really what sold it. I never have to worry about SD cards. The only flaw to this camera is the low battery life. But you can get larger battery from canon with a much longer life.

Computer connection is quick and easy. I have seen reviews by people complaining about it not being compatible with Mac or Final Cut Pro. I am a big editor on Final Cut, and this camera IS compatible with my mac and Final Cut. The files on the video camera are .MTS files because they're HD. All you have to do in Final Cut Pro is use 'Log and Transfer' to upload your clips for editing. Of course the HD fottage takes up a lot of space, but it's worth it for the beautiful crisp picture quality!

I really like this camcorder because the image quality is great and it's sooooo easy to use. I love that the flip-out viewing screen is a touch screen and allows you to access the menus, etc.

What is disappointing is that you can't be closer than 6-7 feet away from your main subject or the focus is bad and/or you can't fit the whole person/object in the screen. This makes it difficult to get a good video if you're indoors in a small or medium sized room. Of course, Sony offers lens adapters and wide angle lenses (i.e.Sony VCL-DH0774 74mm 0.75x Wide Conversion lens for Sony DSC-H7/H9 Digital Still Cameras) for this camcorder that you can buy at an extra cost ($100-$200). I think they purposely designed the "standard" lens this way so you'd shell out the money to buy the extra equipment.
