Acer Aspire 4810 Timeline 14.0-Inch Laptop Review

This review relates more to the AS4810T-8480, but as it is not sold on Amazon yet, I wanted to make sure everyone is aware of the problems I am experiencing on that model, as this might impact the entire product line.

I received my new laptop 4 days ago. Overall it is great, and I'd love to post a positive review here. It looks great from the outside, the 6-8 hours of battery life is a reality (let's see how long it lasts before the battery worns out), keyboard is nice, etc... Also agree that the built quality is not perfect, but overall it is fine.

My major concern, is the overall system stability. I am not a heavy user, mostly internet surfing.

However, in the past 4 days, I have experienced a tremendous number of crashes, maybe 2 to 3 a day, just using normal programs such as Skype, Internet Explorer 8 and MSN Live Messenger... At somepoint, the CPU goes to 100% utilization and the system becomes very slow or totally unresponsive, so I need to do a forced shut down. I thought this was due to Internet Explorer, but experienced the same with Firefox yesterday...

I just tried to install a USB AT&T 3G key, and despite a successful installation, now I am unable to log into Windows because on the log on screen my cursor and keyboards are none responsive. I have just logged a ticket with their Support Team, let's see what they come up.

I have never had some many problems with a new laptop in the past and am considering returning it for a refund.

Again, I would really like to love this laptop, I think ACER has a great product here, BUT I cannot recommended it at this point, and hope I will be able to update my recommendation very soon.

UPDATE: just over one month after receiving the laptop and as I was about to return it after ACER's customer service proved unable to provide a solution, I updated the Intel VGA driver (as many of you suggested in your comments, thanks a lot - my bad for not checking them out earlier!) and the BIOS, both being recommended on [..] and I am happy to confirm the issues have disappeared. The laptop is now fully functional, so I have decided to keep it.
In regards to other features of the computer, I would say that my main complaints are the lack of a hardware switch for the wireless, and the screen is a little too glossy for me. The speakers are a bit weak. Bluetooth could have been included but I knew about it so can't complain.

But overall I'm still happy with the Timeline, and would recommend it to anyone traveling a lot and not requiring high CPU power!

Lowest Price Acer Aspire 4810 Timeline 14.0-Inch Laptop

Have been using this laptop for about one week now. So far it has been wonderful. It is not the fastest laptop I have had, but it has the best battery life, very light and thin, and can run the programs that I am intending to use it for without difficulty. The screen looks great, the computer looks sleek and my daughter uses it for the whole day without needing a charge. I bought it for her to use it at school, and neither of us are gamers. The only negatives are the extraneous software that I proceeded to delete, and all the idiosyncrasies of the Vista OS. I am sure it will be much better after I download Windows 7 in October.

So far, it has exceeded my expectation for a laptop that I wanted to get for my daughter. Bought this computer for my daughter, as the light weight and long battery life seemed ideal, even though it was a little on the slow side. When we got it, I noticed the speed issue right away, and the speakers were really pathetic. Two days after she had it, the keyboard and track pad just completely stopped responding. She couldn't type anything in on the account log-in page. No one home! We sent it back to Amazon (they were great to take it back) and we went down to Office Max and bought the same one on sale for a little less. She didn't have it for one whole day and the same thing happened. Don't have a clue what that's all about. It may be a fluke, and I know there's a warranty, etc. Just didn't make me feel real confident. We took it back and got an HP. This is my fourth portable computer purchase. The other three, were all really too heavy to be truly portable - more like desktop replacements, so this is the first one that I take with me when I am out-and-about.

I almost bought the 11.6 inch Gateway netbook with the AMD processor, but when i saw the specs on this, the hdmi port, and the free windows 7 upgrade, that sealed the deal.

Just wanted to add to the other comments about this machine.

Video performance: Standard xvid/divx files and 720P mkv files played from the hard drive in full screen mode without a hitch.

I tested an HD version of Brothers and Sisters
at [...] It played well at full screen when the unit was running off A/C current. Running off the battery with the powersmart mode enabled, the video deteriorated, but then I pressed the green leaf button to disable that mode and the HD stream looked fine.

This paragraph is in the pdf user manual on the machine and explains why you probably don't want to be in powersmart mode with HD video:

"The Acer PowerSmart key uses the power-saving features of your computer's
graphics sub-system to reduce overall power consumption. When you press the
Acer PowerSmart key, the Windows graphics scheme will be changed to
Windows Vista Basic, screen brightness reduced and the graphics chip will be
switched to a lower speed.
Press the Acer PowerSmart key again to return to your previous settings."

High quality streams from Netflix seemed to play well at full screen, even in power saving mode, so go figure.

DVD drive: I don't really mind it not having a DVD drive. I'm using the 2 GB SD cards I have laying around and I'll buy some large SDHC cards (16 GIG or better) later on.

Battery life: Using the power saver mode I can get more than 8 hours of moderate and intermittent web surfing with the wi-fi enabled. If you are going to watch video, that's going to eat up more battery life.

Touchpad: The mouse clicker on the touchpad is a little stiff. I usually have a wireless mouse for my notebooks, but since this is my mobile machine, I'm getting acclimated to the touchpad. I find that I'm more comfortable using the 'heavy tap' method on the touchpad for mouse selection than the clicker.

Heat: Bottom only gets slightly warm sometimes and I have had it resting on exposed skin for extended periods with no discomfort.

This computer is ideal for those who may want something small, but having a little more power and screen size than a netbook, and extended battery life.

Overall, I'm very pleased with it.

I bought this machine before one week so I dont know absolutely everything about it,but the batery is realy amazing,when you are writing some documents without conection to net,batery life is bigger then 8!! hours, normaly with wi-fi conection is not problem be 7 hours on-line and when you need max power,this laptop give you more than 5.30 hours of comfort using,thats realy wonderful for 3,5 lb heavy toy. In normal using is realy quick,so quick how is it possible,Im realy happy from that and enjoying him. I tried play some games like NeedForSpeed underground and no problem,same like experience with Halflife. Perfect
