Acer Aspire 4810 Timeline 14.0-Inch Laptop Review

This review relates more to the AS4810T-8480, but as it is not sold on Amazon yet, I wanted to make sure everyone is aware of the problems I am experiencing on that model, as this might impact the entire product line.

I received my new laptop 4 days ago. Overall it is great, and I'd love to post a positive review here. It looks great from the outside, the 6-8 hours of battery life is a reality (let's see how long it lasts before the battery worns out), keyboard is nice, etc... Also agree that the built quality is not perfect, but overall it is fine.

My major concern, is the overall system stability. I am not a heavy user, mostly internet surfing.

However, in the past 4 days, I have experienced a tremendous number of crashes, maybe 2 to 3 a day, just using normal programs such as Skype, Internet Explorer 8 and MSN Live Messenger... At somepoint, the CPU goes to 100% utilization and the system becomes very slow or totally unresponsive, so I need to do a forced shut down. I thought this was due to Internet Explorer, but experienced the same with Firefox yesterday...

I just tried to install a USB AT&T 3G key, and despite a successful installation, now I am unable to log into Windows because on the log on screen my cursor and keyboards are none responsive. I have just logged a ticket with their Support Team, let's see what they come up.

I have never had some many problems with a new laptop in the past and am considering returning it for a refund.

Again, I would really like to love this laptop, I think ACER has a great product here, BUT I cannot recommended it at this point, and hope I will be able to update my recommendation very soon.

UPDATE: just over one month after receiving the laptop and as I was about to return it after ACER's customer service proved unable to provide a solution, I updated the Intel VGA driver (as many of you suggested in your comments, thanks a lot - my bad for not checking them out earlier!) and the BIOS, both being recommended on [..] and I am happy to confirm the issues have disappeared. The laptop is now fully functional, so I have decided to keep it.
In regards to other features of the computer, I would say that my main complaints are the lack of a hardware switch for the wireless, and the screen is a little too glossy for me. The speakers are a bit weak. Bluetooth could have been included but I knew about it so can't complain.

But overall I'm still happy with the Timeline, and would recommend it to anyone traveling a lot and not requiring high CPU power!

I've worked on computers for about 4 years now, mostly desktops, and i've seen about all you can see. Well when vista was released i had realized i had really seen nothing! Single core processing was becoming a thing of the past and computers all over the world were crashing and burning because they did not have the power to run vista. Well now, Acer, of all companies(which i do like) has went back to the old school route just utilize power to give you less power consumption for up to 8 hours of battery life by using a low end processor. Well at what cost. Mostly speed, overall stability and just a sense that this product was rushed out to the masses just so they could use it as a guenie pig. Well first of it IS one of the thinnest notebooks you can find next to Macbooks, which the Acer Timeline is about 100 times behind, so you really shouldnt compare them. Also if you ever read vista you'll realize that on the back the minimum system for basic is a 1.5 processor, and 1.6 for premium, and at least a 2.0 processor for Ultimate which people rarely have. Also just because you have 3 or 4 gigs of RAM doesnt increase performance if your processor isnt up to par. Its like having a mustang GT with a 1.5 liter 85 horsepower 1985 volks wagon engine inside of it, no way. So the CPU 100% problem and the crashing issues are because these systems barely meet the minimum requirements to even RUN vista, nothing more nothing less. Also if you read anything about Windows Vista, you'll see that it does not recommend using the operating system using single core processors, and it hasnt for about 2 years. So what would make the Timeline a great looking, working and selling computer? Yep you guessed it good ole Windows XP. So if you have an extra 80 bucks, throw in a 250 or 320gig hard drive and get an authentic copy of XP off tigerdirect, or download one, and your off and flying. Unless your tech savy and want to go into the BIOS and reconfigure or flash the bios to get it to recognize Windows XP, which is NOT an easy task, so i recomment just replacing it with a clean format. XP Drivers for ALL acers can be found on there website, which is why i still love acer and hate giving it a poor review, but after trying this one and the 15.6 with the same issues i just can NOT recommend this, stock, like it is. So good product, with specs that can't keep up with the operating system, plain and simple. Btw the 3 or 4 gigs of RAM just gives you more multitasking ability, which in this case is pointless. I purchased the 4810T laptop with the 3500 single core processor. It has 2 driver upgrades that MUST be done or its a mess. Easy and explained on Acer support site. Then it runs well for any non-gamer, I have had 8 programs running at once with no problem, no noticeable slowing, no crashes. The battery life is 5 or more hours with heavy use, close to 8 with some caution. I cannot imagine why anyone with the su3500 is having any problem with vista unless they did not update the drivers, or change vista settings to run for performance. Lowest Price Acer Aspire 4810 Timeline 14.0-Inch Laptop

Have been using this laptop for about one week now. So far it has been wonderful. It is not the fastest laptop I have had, but it has the best battery life, very light and thin, and can run the programs that I am intending to use it for without difficulty. The screen looks great, the computer looks sleek and my daughter uses it for the whole day without needing a charge. I bought it for her to use it at school, and neither of us are gamers. The only negatives are the extraneous software that I proceeded to delete, and all the idiosyncrasies of the Vista OS. I am sure it will be much better after I download Windows 7 in October.

So far, it has exceeded my expectation for a laptop that I wanted to get for my daughter.
